Concentrating on keeping place in a tight formation
at high altitude, Lt. Noble G. Holbert has nothing else on his mind but
flying his 759th Squadron, 459th Bomb Group Liberator with as much skill
as he can muster. The average temperature inside unheated bombers
cruising over 20,000 feet was minus 50 degrees F. Feet and hands went numb
quickly and the bulky shearling leather flying jackets and suits never
seemed to provide enough warmth. Excerpted
