When the 318th Fighter Group got P-47Ns with their 1,000 miles radius of action, they had the capability to escort the B-29s to Japan and back as well as hit any terget in the home islands. This 19th Squadron P-47N is being meticulously boresighted on Ie Shima, one of the Seventh Air Force's last wartime bases. Getting a fully loaded N, at over 11 tons, off the ground took every bit of runway, even on days that weren't blistering hot (and most were).
